Basic Brain Biology

Go to http://faculty.washington.edu/chudler/chmodel.html and answer the following questions

1.  Click on the more about neurons link.  Read through the information on the page.
a) Using the neuron on the following page label the parts and give a basic description of what the different parts of the neuron does.
b) What does a neuron do?
c) Go to the top of the page and click on the action potential portion.  Read through the page slowly  (chapter 2 of your text will also cover this material but in my opinion not as well). After reading the material summarize how a neuron works.
2. Scroll down to the bottom of the screen and click on Back to: exploring the nervous system.  Click on the brain basics link.  Then click on our divided brain: lobes of the brain.  Read through the information on the page.
a) what is the difference between a sulci and gyri?
b) List the lobes of the brain and give a brief description of what each does.
c) Use the brain on the following page to label the different lobes of the brain.
3. Now go to http://faculty.washington.edu/chudler/java/ready.html and take the test. 
a) Once the words appear on the screen, read (out loud) the COLORS, not the WORDS.
b) Click "Finish"when you're done and write down the time.
c) Then click "continue experiment" and do it again
d) Why do you think this is so difficult?
4. Now click on this spinal cord link. Read through the page.
 a) How many bones are in the spinal cord?
 b) How is the spinal cord related to the nervous system?
 c) What is the difference between the white and gray matter within the spinal cord?
5. Finally go to http://faculty.washington.edu/chudler/introb.html.  Choose one of the articles that looks interesting to you.  Tell me which one you're doing (so there are no duplicates), read it, and be prepared to summarize its contents.  I will ask you to report to the class the information you learned from this article.
