GOVERNMENT

You are a judge, presiding over a courtroom.

The following case comes before you:  A man has been arrested for abusing his infant(6-months old) son.  It     has been proven that the father physically slapped the baby several times, frustrated with the baby’s constant crying.  The baby has suffered permanent brain damage, and is now being kept alive by a life-support system.  The mother of the child is also being investigated for knowing that the abuse was taking place, but did nothing to stop it.   So far no charges have been ordered against her.

The father faces up to 14 years for infant abuse, as long as the child is alive.  If the baby dies, the father faces the death penalty.  Since it is unlikely that the child will recover, the mother wants to remove him from the life support system.  The father obviously opposes that move.  Both the mother and father have lawyers and present their case to you.  How would you rule?
