Creating a Constitution Activity

Now that the outline of the government has been created, what next?

The founding fathers began with a Bill of Rights: 10 amendments to the Constitution that they thought were the most important.
What are the 10 most important rights that a person can have? In other words, if there were only ten things you could make the government do (or prevent it from doing), what would they be?

Remember, our Founding Fathers thought that "people may establish what form of government they please, and change it as they please" - if you want to stay in power, you want to make sure the people won't change the government!!

As you discuss and debate, keep the following issues in mind:

bulletThe Preamble and the purpose of the Constitution
bulletWill citizens be guaranteed any rights?  If so, which rights?
bulletdiscrimination
bulleteducation
bulletemployment
bulletequality
bulletfood
bulletguns and arms

bulletwho holds the power - the federal or state government?
When you have your ten most important written up and checked, move on to adding them to a broadsheet, the type of document used for the original Constitution.
