Step1 - Skim
Quickly look over the whole
assignment. Look at the pictures, read the captions, check out
the main points. Read the headings and subheadings (everything
in big bold writing). Without
reading a single paragraph, you have an idea of what the section
is about.
COMPLETE THE FOLLOWING SENTENCE:
Step 2 - Question
Change the headings and subheadings into
questions (for example: "The United States in 1800" could be changed
into "What was the United States like in 1800?"). This will give
your reading a purpose - to answer your own questions.
WRITE THE HEADINGS AND THEN CHANGE THEM INTO QUESTIONS
Step 3 - Read
Now read the assignment, keeping your
questions from step 2 in mind. Mentally answer each question as
you finish the section (for example: when you finish reading
"The United States in 1800" you should be able to tell what the
United States was like in 1800).
READ THE ASSIGNMENT
Step 4 - Recite
Everyone will quickly forget new facts
unless they use them. Look away from your book and recite the
answers to your questions. You could do it mentally, with
another student, or on paper. This helps you be able to recall
the answer later.
WRITE THE ANSWERS TO YOUR QUESTIONS IN THE SPACES BELOW
Step 5 - Review
When you have finished the entire
reading assignment, mentally review the whole thing. Go over in
your mind what you think are the main points
LIST AT LEAST TWO OF THE MAIN POINTS IN COMPLETE SENTENCES:
